Dr. Yanofsky received his Ph.D. in 1986 from the University of Washington in Seattle and pursued his postdoctoral studies at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He joined the faculty of the UCSD Biology department in 1990, where he was named a Packard Fellow in 1991 and a Beckman Young Investigator in 1992. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Developmental Biology and on the National Science Foundation (NSF) grants advisory panel.

Research focus: Reproductive development

Research in the Yanofsky laboratory focuses on Arabidopsis as an experimental organism to understand events ranging from the transition to flowering through the production of fruits and seeds. Applications of this work include control of flowering, fruit structure, and seed size in agriculturally important plants.

Technologies developed in the Yanofsky laboratory:

  • Control of seed dispersal and seed size
  • Acceleration of flowering
  • Control of lignification
