Dr. Crawford received his Ph.D. in 1984 from the Massachusetts Institutie of Technology. After postdoctoral work with Ron Davis at the Dept. of Biochemistry at Stanford University, he joined the UCSD Biology faculty in 1988.  He has served on Federal Advisory Panels for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Research focus: Nitrate Assimilation, Protein and Gene Function and Regulation, Transposons

The Crawford laboratory studies the function and regulation of genes and proteins in the nitrate assimilation pathway.  Present focus is on mechanisms of nitrate uptake and regulation.  In addition, ongoing studies are elucidating the mechanism and control of transposition for the Arabidopsis transposon Tag1 in both Arabidopsis and rice.

Technologies developed in the Crawford laboratory:

  • Genes that encode nitrate reductases.
  • Genes that encode nitrate transporters.
  • Transposons useful for functional genomics that are active in both dicots and monocots.
